The United States is Spain’s leading partner for trade outside the European Union. Investments between the two countries are decidedly reciprocal: while the US ranks first in investments in Spain (18.76% of total investments), it is also the country in which Spain invests most. Additionally, Spain has the world’s fourteenth largest economy (fourth in the EU) with a GDP of USD 1.2 billion, 46 million consumers and 61 million tourists per year. In other words, the US is a very important trading partner for Spain and vice versa.

Portugal and the United States have maintained diplomatic relations since 1791. They share common values and strong ties in a wide range of areas, including security and defence, political and diplomatic cooperation, science, technology, trade and investment. The US is also Portugal’s most important trading partner outside the European Union, and US tourists visiting Portugal are among the groups which have most increased in recent years.

Currently led by partner Nadja Vietz (Barcelona), our US Desk is the product of our strategic alliance with US firm Harris Bricken, with which we share a common business philosophy and vision. Vietz studied law in Germany and is qualified to practise in Germany, Spain and the United States, where she belongs to the Washington State Bar Association.

Monereo Meyer Abogados’ US Desk assists US companies with their investments and commercial activities in Spain and Portugal and advises on Golden Visa matters. Our team of lawyers, based in both Spain and Portugal as well as the United States, has extensive knowledge of US law; this affords our US Desk a clear competitive advantage and provides added value to companies.

In addition, our US Desk advises Spanish and Portuguese companies in situ at the offices of Harris Bricken in the US, whether these companies are just entering the US market or are already doing business there. Harris Bricken has offices in Beijing, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York City, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, São Paulo and Seattle.

Our United States coverage is extended by our membership in CBBL Cross Border Business Lawyers (the only network of German-speaking lawyers in the world), of which we are co-founders and promotors, and by member firms Thiedmann & Edler in Chicago and Schumann Burghart LLP, in New York City.

This allows our team of lawyers in Spain, Portugal and in the United States to provide our clients with first-rate, multilingual advice in Spain and Portugal on the one hand and the United States on the other, covering a wide range of legal areas, including corporate law, M&A, finance, real estate law, tax matters, labour law, litigation and immigration law.
